On Wednesday, January 16, 2019, alumni across the country tuned in to the inaugural online Alumni Leadership Speaker Series. The conversation featured Richard Dzina ’81, Executive Vice President of the Financial Services Group of the New York Federal Reserve, and Jeremy Downs ’96, Director of Business Development at Uber. Jeb Beckwith ’80, a Managing Director and Head of Financial Institutions at GreenPoint Financial, moderated the discussion, which focused on the intersection of finance and technology, two industries that permeate nearly every aspect of daily life.
After brief introductions about their respective career paths, Dzina and Downs took turns answering thought-provoking questions from Beckwith, as well as students, faculty, and other members of the virtual audience. With conversations ranging from flying vehicles to blockchain and cybersecurity, Dzina and Downs illustrated the necessity for these two industries to collaborate in order for society to continuously move forward.
The panelists concluded the webinar with their thoughts on how St. Mark’s can help students to thrive in an ever-changing world. “St. Mark’s should prepare for what is going on in society, but don’t change any of the fundamentals,” Dzina suggested. Downs echoed this sentiment, adding that St. Mark’s should continue to “inspire curiosity in an educational setting,” while “teaching our children how to act as digital citizens.”
The Alumni Leadership Speaker Series aims to provide Marksmen with lifelong learning opportunities, hearing from guest speakers in a variety of fields and interests. Making these important conversations easily accessible to Marksmen across the world is a pivotal next step in the growth of the Alumni Association’s programming.
