The ceramics program goes above and beyond artistic lessons and strives to inspire creative thinking and develop problem-solving skills in its student-artists.
The ceramics classroom and studio are alive with activity throughout the school days. Students learn the essential skills and artistic principles of ceramics and also find a place where their creativity can thrive.

As students progress through the ceramics program, they develop their skills through a series of increasingly advanced courses. Introductory classes teach basic clay techniques, including hand building and the use of pottery wheels, while more advanced courses delve into complex construction methods, glazing, and firing. Students at the honors level are encouraged to pursue individual research, with the AP Ceramics course culminating in the submission of a 3D Art and Design portfolio to demonstrate mastery in craftsmanship.

In addition to the artistic and technical components of ceramics, students also present their work to classmates and learn to give and receive constructive criticism, further honing their communication skills.

St. Mark's ceramicists regularly earn national acclaim for their work, including recognition by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
