The St. Mark's 3D Design and Woodworking program is a true melting pot of skills, requiring boys to conceive creative concepts and then bring those to life through hands-on craftsmanship.
3D Design and Woodworking courses allow students to explore the elements and principles of design related to three-dimensional sculpture and learn about wood and metal shop safety as they are introduced to both hand and power woodworking tools.
As students progress, they explore techniques for wood joinery, precision hand and power tools, welding, metal fabrication, and finishing techniques for wood and metal. Students pursue unique paths of interest through individual research and problem-solving for assigned and self-developed projects.
Above all, these courses emphasize craftsmanship, creative problem-solving, drawing skills, and effective work habits.
Each year, one senior wood and metal student is chosen to create a unique sculpture to display on campus the whole year after he graduates. The senior begins by drafting a proposal that outlines the statue's design, meaning, and construction, and producing a scale model.
“I made this piece as a legacy showing how I feel my experiences at St. Mark’s have prepared me," said Bryan Graham, ’24, whose proposal was selected as the 2024 senior sculpture. "After eight years at St. Mark's, I feel ready to spread my wings and go out into the world ready to take on challenges that are thrown my way."
