Teacher Earns Citizenship
A quarter-century after arriving in the United States, St. Mark’s Spanish teacher and Community Service Director Jorge Correa became a citizen on Friday, December 7, 2018. After passing his citizenship test and interview over the week of Thanksgiving, Jorge took the Oath of Allegiance at the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Office in Irving.
“Becoming a citizen was the last step in the process of immigration – the culmination,” Jorge said. “The legal recognition backs the feeling I have had all this time that I belong here.”
In the classroom, Jorge has shared his journey to citizenship with students. As he prepared for the Citizenship Test, he quizzed his classes and advisory with sample questions like “Who did the United States fight in World War II?” and “Name one of the four amendments to the Constitution that addresses who can vote.”

Several of Jorge’s colleagues attended his citizenship ceremony, including Student Store Manager and St. Mark’s parent Nancy Goldberg, who said, “It was awe-inspiring to be in the room and made me proud to be an American. Jorge has worked hard and waited so long for this day to come and I can’t imagine what he was feeling when he said the Pledge of Allegiance for the first time as an American citizen.”
