Publications Go For Gold

St. Mark’s 2016–2017 student publications from across campus won national acclaim at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s National Conference over spring break.

 

“It is deeply gratifying to see our students recognized once again for their creativity, dedication, and commitment to excellence,” said David W. Dini, Eugene McDermott Headmaster. “I am proud of the continued strength and quality of all our publications and the tremendous work that our boys produce.”   

 

Throughout the 2016–2017 school year, Marksmen were busy in classrooms and computer labs, crafting engaging and vibrant publications that showcase their talents and their work. The ReMarker newspaper tackled campus news as well as difficult contemporary topics, like the refugee crisis and gun control, with objective professionalism. The Marque showcased beautiful works by students, from poetry and short stories to photography and ceramics. The Mini-Marque, gave Middle Schoolers a place to exhibit their own work, presented within the theme of “Colors.” The Marksmen yearbook went beyond the typical chronicle of the year’s events and captured the pulse and feeling of the 2016–2017 school year.

 

And, in its first year being submitted to the Crown Awards, The Scientific Marksman won its first Gold Crown. The Scientific Marksman is a science journal that “showcases notable endeavors and discoveries in the STEM fields both in and outside the community.” Dubbed “The Vintage Issue,” the 2016–2017 journal featured a look back at the impact and legacy of the McDermott-Green Science & Math Quadrangle, which was demolished in the summer of 2017 to construct the Winn Science Center. The journal also included articles on cutting-edge research and technology, like senior Niteesh Vemuri’s time working alongside a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist and interviews with scientists at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN).

 

“We have been amazed by the students’ ability to produce their own magazine from scratch,” said Scientific Marksman faculty co-sponsors Nupur Israni and Dr. Bonnie Flint. “We try to be very hands off and let this really belong to them.”

 

Congratulations to all of the Marksmen who worked on these publications, including the leadership of The ReMarker editor-in-chief Case Lowry ’17, Marksmen editor-in-chief Andrew Lin ’17, The Scientific Marksman editors-in-chief Killian Green ’17 and Rohil Rai ’17, The Marque editors-in-chief Killian Green ’17 and Josh Bandopadhay ’17, and The Mini-Marque editors Alam Alidina ’21 and Josh Mysore ’21.
