Batter Up!
St. Mark’s has worked hard to make sure the construction of the new Winn Science Center has as little impact on campus life as possible. In order to make room for the 50,000 square-foot facility, some things had to be relocated, including the baseball team’s batting cages. Luckily, as spring sports team begin their preseason work, the baseball team won’t miss any time in the cages. Just across from Arthur P. Ruff Field, two brand new batting cages are ready for varsity baseball practice, thanks to the generosity of Ricki and Andy Rabin.
“St. Mark’s has been instrumental to both of our sons’ development, and we were happy to do anything we could to support the School,” said Andy Rabin. “Athletics was a natural area for us to support, having seen the lessons of character, leadership, responsibility, and work ethic that St. Mark’s coaches impart. On a day-to-day level, we know these new batting cages will help the team grow stronger and better.”
Varsity baseball player Jimmy Rodriquez ’18 agrees: “It’s great for team morale to have new equipment, and it’s a huge improvement having them so much closer to the field. With the older guys coming back from last year and a great new group of younger guys ready to step up, I think we’ve got a real chance of winning SPC this year.”
The 70-foot cages are an upgrade for the team, with heavy-duty nets to prevent tearing and reduce ricochets from hit balls. The new turf will keep players from rolling ankles and the nets will keep baseballs inside the cage. The cages are also much more accessible than before, allowing players to use them as much as possible without losing practice time transferring equipment and groups across campus.
Varsity baseball coach Johnny Hunter is looking forward to the spring season. “We have a terrific group of seniors returning to this year’s ball club. They understand the importance of creating and sustaining a legacy, and I am excited about where they will take us this season.”
