On Saturday, February 10, a team of Middle Schoolers earned second place at the local chapter-level MathCounts competition, held at SMU. Four of the team members, Matthew Fan ’22, Jeffrey Chen ’22, Alex Geng ’22, and Kevin Lu ’24, will now advance to the state MathCounts competition in Austin on March 23.
Nearly a dozen schools competed at SMU in a series of three-hour rounds. Students completed various math problems, both individually and as a groups.
“There were a lot of amazing and talented students at this year’s competition, and I am extremely happy with how well they worked as a team in order to reach their goal,” said Middle School Math Teacher Valerie Davis, who sponsors the team.
The St. Mark’s team has met every week since the start of the school year and have had help and guidance from the Upper School boys who come to mentor them. The boys also practice extra problems during their own free time.
