Journalist of the Year
Rish Basu ’17, managing editor of The ReMarker student newspaper has been named the 2017 Texas High School Journalist of the Year by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. Rish is the fifth consecutive Marksman journalist to win the state title. The next step is for him to represent Texas at the national competition level. In April, he will participate in the National Scholastic Press Association’s (NSPA) annual convention in Seattle where all state winners’ portfolios will be evaluated by a national panel. The High School Journalist of the Year program and competition is sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the NSPA.
"It's an honor to follow in the footsteps of so many talented journalists before me,” Rish said. “The publications staff is filled with talented and hard working journalists and this award would not have been possible without the help and guidance I received from them.”
For his state win, Rish will receive a $1,500 scholarship later this spring. The national winner receives a $3,500 award. Entries are judged on leadership, writing, story development and coverage offerings, and visual communications. A panel of three scholastic journalism specialists served on the state judging panel. Last year, Will Clark ’16, now a communications major at the University of Texas at Austin, was the state winner and placed second in the national competition. Before Clark, Matthew Conley ’15, Ryan O’Meara ’14 and Daniel Hersh ’13 were all named state winners.
