Model UN Competition

The St. Mark’s Model United Nations club (MARKMUN) participated in its first interscholastic conference on Saturday, November 12. History Department Chair David Fisher and 10 Marskmen attended the Dallas Area MUN (DAMUN) competition sponsored by Uplift North Hills High School in Irving. Many local public schools sent delegates, as did Hockaday. Despite fielding an untried and very junior team, Marksmen won the following distinctions:
  • Jackson Singhal ’20 - General Assembly (France) – Honorable Delegate
  • Austin Montgomery ’18 - African Union (Uganda) – Distinguished Delegate
  • Joe Lofgren ’19 - Historical Crisis Committee (France) – Outstanding Delegate
  • Mo Singhal ’18 - World Health Organization (France) – Outstanding Delegate
The MARKMUN club has set its sights on even more challenging Model UN conventions. This spring, the club intends to go to the Houston MUN (sponsored by the University of Houston) and is considering future competitions at Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown. The club encourages any Upper School Marksmen interested in foreign affairs, diplomacy, public speaking, or journalism to try out for a delegation assignment.

The Model United Nations allows students to learn about diplomacy, international relations, and communications by stepping into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. The simulations are modeled after the United Nations General Assembly.
