Lower School students took to the polls today to vote for this year’s addition to the Leadership Wall. Each of the four classes nominated a historic figure who exemplifies the traits of leadership and character and the Lower School votes on a winner. The selected leader is then displayed on the Leadership Wall in the front of the Lower School.
This year, boys were asked to research and nominate prominent women in history. The four classes nominated Mother Teresa, the missionary and humanitarian; Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing; Helen Keller, the deaf and blind author and political activist; and Clara Barton, the Civil War nurse and founder of the American Red Cross.
After the nominations were announced at a special chapel service, the boys had two days to consider their choice. Just as the Leadership Wall program introduces students to unique historic figures, it also serves as an important introduction to the democratic process of voting.
“In a democracy, every vote counts and you can only do your best if you are an informed voter,” Barb York, Head of Lower School, told the boys during chapel. “Informed voters choose the person who has been or will be the strongest and most effective leader.”
When the votes were tallied, the Lower School selected Mother Teresa. Her photo will be hung on the Leadership Wall, alongside such figures as George Washington and Harriet Tubman.
