Debate Continues Strong Season

While there is still another trimester to go, this has already been a banner year for debate students. Over the weekend of February 5, 2016, Jake Galant ’16 and Ammar Plumber ’16 won the Colleyville Debate Tournament, a tier-two national competitive tournament. The next weekend, varsity teams competed at the Pinecrest School tournament, a tier-one nationally competitive tournament. Jake and Harris Wilson ’18 won five of their six preliminary debates and got a bye through the double octafinals. Ammar and Ansh Khullar '16 won all six of their preliminary debates and were seeded first when elimination rounds began. They also got a bye through the double octafinals. At the Pinecrest Debate Tournament in Florida, Ammar was recognized as the second best speaker. In January, Ammar and Ansh competed in the prestigious Montgomery Bell Academy debate tournament and advanced to the semifinals after defeating teams from The Blake School and Glenbrook North. Ammar was also recognized with the top speaker award.

Ammar and Ansh will be attending the Texas Forensics Association State Tournament over the weekend of March 10. In April, they will also join the team of Jake and Harris at the National Debate Coaches Association National Championship at the University of Central Florida. The year will conclude with the Novice Round Up hosted by St. Mark’s.

As debate students continue competing across the nation, another Marksman is preparing for a different kind of speech competition. This summer, Mujin Kwun ’19 will be one of 24 high school students nationwide invited to compete in the 11th Chinese Bridge Speech Contest, hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Mujin will participate in the speech contest where he will perform a written speech in both English and Chinese.
