A year after first making headlines with their emergency response smart phone app, Sahitya Senapathy ’20 and his two “Team Protons” teammates (Rushil Chander of West Middle School and Ashwin Koduri of Rice Middle School) are back on the national stage. This time, the seventh-graders traveled to Washington, D.C., as one of the national finalist teams in the U.S. Army’s 13th annual eCybermission STEM competition. Before a panel of high-ranking civilian and military researchers, the boys presented their app, CERTPRO, which helps emergency response teams organize and coordinate volunteers in a disaster. While Sahitya’s team didn’t win the top prize, the Army awarded the app a $5,000 grant reserved for projects whose real-world implantation shows the most promise.
Last year, Plano’s Community Emergency Response Team began using the CERTPRO app for training exercises.
“The fact that this app, which is an excellent product with real-world potential, has been developed by middle schoolers is mind boggling to many of us who will actually benefit from this technology," said Ron Moore, Plano CERT coordinator, in a 2014 interview with the Plano Star Courier.
