Students Compete in Chinese Bridge Competition
On Saturday, April 5, 2014, several St. Mark’s Chinese students participated in the 2014 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students at the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas. Blake Daugherty ’18 took second place, while classmates Zachary Gilstrap ’18 and Avery Pearson ’18 tied for third. On April 27, Blake will move on to the nine-state regional competition, where two or three students will be chosen to compete in the international “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition held in China. The local competition consisted of three parts: a two-minute speech in Chinese, questions about Chinese language and culture, and a three-minute cultural performance.
On March 8, 2014, Ian Fitzgerald ’17 won second place in the ninth annual Chinese Bridge Speech Contest for high school students in Boston, Massachusetts. Ian competed with a group of 24 finalists selected nationwide who submitted audio recordings of their speeches, along with scripts in Chinese and English. The contest was sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International, the University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute at Boston, and the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools.
