4th Grader Spells Victory

Twenty-five boys in grades four through eight took to the stage for the St. Mark's Middle School Spelling Bee. One by one the boys stepped up to the microphone to spell words including fibrillation, cayenne, thoracic, and crocodilian.

Finally, it all came down to fourth grader Sam Morgan and the word brachiosaur (a large herbivorous dinosaur). After Sam confidently spelling out the eleven-letter word, the entire auditorium cheered and his classmates rushed to congratulate him as the first fourth grader to win the School's spelling bee.

Sam will now move on to a regional spelling competition, the winner of which will advance to the famous Scripps National Spelling Bee. If he wins, Sam will become the second St. Mark's student to win the National Spelling Bee, after Sai Gunturi ’07 in 2003.
