Alumni Nationwide Give Back

Marksmen across the nation joined together on Saturday, Aug. 6, to give back to their communities during the National Day of Service, a continuation of the values of community service that St. Mark’s teaches.

From coast to coast, more than 40 Marksmen and guests in Dallas, Austin, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area spent the afternoon at their local Ronald McDonald House Charities, a nonprofit that supports families of children who must travel away from home to seek medical care. Additionally, Marksmen in Houston spent the afternoon serving the Houston Food Bank.

At St. Mark’s, we learned the value of supporting our community, and it’s important as alumni to honor that purpose,” said Reid McGlamery ’96, chair of St. Mark’s Los Angeles regional alumni club. “Days of service allow us to reconnect with our friends across the country and to be a part of something greater than ourselves.”

For this year’s National Day of Service, the Alumni Board selected the theme of “Children’s Health.” At six Ronald McDonald Houses across the country, Marksmen and guests spent time painting and playing with families and assembling and distributing meals and snacks.

“It's gratifying to see the Alumni Board and our regional clubs live out the life lessons of service and leadership – the same values we hope to instill in current Marksmen,” said Alex Eshelbrenner ’04, Ahlberg & Ribman Family director of Alumni Relations. “It all comes back to what St. Mark’s teaches us about helping others and striving to move our communities forward.”

The National Day of Service began in 2019, when alumni across the country volunteered at various nonprofits combating homelessness. Following the pandemic, the National Day of Service resumed this year.
