Senior Named Presidential Scholar

On Thursday, May 12, 2022, Tomek Marczewski ’22 was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in Arts. Tomek joins the 58th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, recognizing 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. Earlier this year, Tomek was one of only 56 student artists chosen as Presidential Scholar Finalists by the National YoungArts Competition.  

 

"We are incredibly proud of Tomek for his recognition as a United States Presidential Scholar,” said David W. Dini, Eugene McDermott Headmaster. “His commitment to excellence in and out of the classroom is matched only by his curiosity and his creativity. Tomek makes a difference everywhere he goes and leaves a very proud legacy at St. Mark’s that will inspire the Marksmen who follow in his footsteps. This honor is also a credit to his teachers, his fellow students, and his family.”  

 

Tomek is the first student of St. Mark’s Wood & Metal Program to be named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Harrison Lin ’14, St. Mark’s Interim Wood & Metal Instructor, added: “Watching Tomek grow as an artist, both technically and conceptually, has been inspiring. Tomek is a talented communicator as well – he presented and defended his piece in front of a panel of artists at YoungArts. I think this award also reflects all the hard work and dedication that John Frost (former Wood & Metal Instructor and current Artist in Residence) has invested into the program.” 

Over the past decade, more than 20 Marksmen have been named YoungArts Finalists, including two, Kyle Smith ’19 and Ryan McCord ’20, who went on to become Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
