African American & Hispanic Seniors Recognized

The College Board has recognized ten seniors for their remarkable academic achievements. Four seniors were named National African American Recognition Program Scholars, and six were named National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars. This honor reflects each boy’s outstanding performance by scoring in the top 10% statewide on the PSAT/NMSQT and attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year.

“We are a community of learners who are driven, dedicated, and motivated,” said Veronica Guzman Pulido, Al G. Hill ’63 Director of College Counseling. “The effort is great, and we are proud of the accomplishments of these students who represent St. Mark’s and, most importantly, themselves. Congratulations!”

Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, or attend school in a rural area or small town may be invited by College Board to apply for academic recognition. Colleges use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups who have excelled academically.

"It’s essential that African American students here at St. Mark’s recognize that this school puts them in the best position possible to succeed later in life," said Bryce Nivet ’22. "Recognitions like this are merely smaller achievements that reward us for staying on the path to our larger goal."

Congratulations to these members of the Class of 2022:

  • National African American Recognition Program Scholars: Enoch Ellis, Grant Jackson, Bryce Nivet, and Ralph Steele
  • National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars: Cooper Cole, Nicolas Gomez, Axel Icazbalceta, Luke Martin, Stefan Moreno, and Sam Reitich

While reflecting on his academic success, Ralph Steele recognized the St. Mark’s teachers who helped him become a National Recognition Program Scholar: “My teachers have always been there to help me comprehend a difficult topic or even reinforce a concept I’ve learned in the past. Although there have been – and still are – many times when I need extra help with homework or any misunderstanding I may have, they’ve never turned down any questions I’ve had or declined any requests for help I’ve needed to do better.”
