This year, some entrepreneurial Marksmen organized and published a business journal: The Lion’s Share. Covering topics from student businesses to global changes within the oil and gas industry, The Lion’s Share provides a fully encompassing perspective on the current state of business and economics. The journal is split into three sections, covering Personal Finance, the Impact of Coronavirus, and Business Insights. It also includes a helpful glossary of financial terms, from “bear market” to “volatility.”
The journal is the idea of co-editors Pranay Sinkre ’22 and Evan Lai ’22, who wanted to build a platform for themselves and their peers to write about and discuss a breadth of different business topics. Pranay and Evan, alongside deputy editor’s
Aadi Khasgiwala ‘23 and Rishab Siddamshetty’23 and a staff of more than ten other Upper School students, worked over the past year to research business issues, write stories, and design both
print and
digital versions of the journal.
“I have always been interested in the business world, and I believe that becoming financially literate early on is essential to attaining a free and fulfilling life,” said Evan. “Through this publication, I want to forge a lasting legacy that continues to educate students about relevant and essential information pertaining to their financial freedom long after I graduate.”
The Lion’s Share is affiliated with the St. Mark’s Business Consortium, a student-run organization that includes the Economics Club, Entrepreneurship Club, Finance Club, and Investment Club. The team is already looking ahead to working on next year’s edition and, through their leadership across all of these clubs, hopes to continue to provide more Upper School students with the opportunity to engage with each other around business-related topics.
“The final product that is posted on the website is amazing, but I really cherish the memories I have shared and the new relationships I have built,” said Evan. “I hope this publication will serve as a medium for students to not only learn about business-related topics but also discover their passions.”
Throughout their publication process, the students received guidance from faculty advisor Harrison Tassopoulos ’07, who served as Assistant Director of the St. Mark’s Fund.
“When Evan and Pranay came to me last summer with the idea of starting a business magazine, I wasn’t sure where we would end up,” said Harrison. “But these students proved that when you come together around a shared vision, with steady leadership and a determined work ethic, you can accomplish a lot.”
