Ceramics Program Earns National Honors

St. Mark’s ceramicists recently received a slate of awards and honors from several national organizations.

In February, Mustafa Latif ’21 and Colin Bajec ’21 were accepted into the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts’ K-12 Exhibition. Over the weekend of March 20, both Marksmen were further recognized as recipients of several awards. Mustafa Latif was awarded the Bailey Pottery Award, the Hyperglaze Software Award, and an Honorable Mention Award. Colin Bajec was awarded the 2021 Bailey Pottery Award, the Dennis Maza Memorial Scholarship, and the Jack Troy Award. Held virtually this year, the K-12 Ceramic Exhibition is the preeminent ceramic event in the nation, gathering artists and professionals from universities, colleges, museums, and art galleries to view exhibitions, demonstrations, talks, and more.

"To say that I am extremely proud of both Mustafa Latif and Colin Bajec would be an understatement," said Scott Ziegler, St. Mark’s ceramics instructor. "Mustafa and Colin have spent countless hours working, develop the ability to express and articulate themselves, navigate through the problem-solving process, and acquire the technical and formal knowledge related to ceramics."

The St. Mark’s ceramics program received the Paragon Industries Test Kiln Award. As a result, the School will receive a top-of-the-line digital test kiln. And, for his outstanding leadership of the School’s program, Mr. Ziegler received the Regina Brown Teacher Award.

"Scott is constantly thinking about how to push his students to think conceptually, what they want their art to say, and what they have to say about their feelings or the world around them," said Marion Glorioso-Kirby, Tony Vintcent Fine Arts Department Chair. "From the moment the students first pick up clay, he teaches them how to execute the techniques needed to produce the work. He is on top of his game every day."

Additionally, several Marksmen were honored at the Young American Talent Exhibit, a visual art competition for North Texas high school students. In the ceramics category, Brett Honaker ’22 won first place and Tim Weigman ’21 received Honorable Mention. Works by Knobel Hunt ’21 and Mustafa Latif ’21 were also selected as finalists among the more than 1,000 submissions.
