Department Chair & Master Teacher to Retire
After a more than 40-year career as a teacher and administrator, including two decades on the St. Mark’s faculty, Joe Milliet will retire at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year. Widely known across the campus and a well-respected faculty leader, “Joe” has been a class sponsor in the junior-senior rotation for the past 18 years, including this year as co-sponsor for the Class of 2021.
For more than a decade, Mr. Milliet served as the Thomas B. Walker III ’73 Mathematics Department Chair, while teaching subjects ranging from Algebra I to BC Calculus. In 2018 after the retirement of his close friend and fellow mathematics teacher, J.T. Sutcliffe, Joe handed off the leadership of the Math Department and stepped into the Suzanne and Patrick McGee Family Master Teaching Chair in Mathematics. Throughout the course of his distinguished teaching career, he’s been deeply involved in serving the College Board and has led Advanced Placement teacher training programs across the country.
Joe Milliet earned a Bachelor’s degree from Tulane and a Master of Education from Lamar University. He spent twenty-two years teaching in the Beaumont Independent School District and was recognized as District Teacher of the Year in 1990. In 2002, not long after his arrival at St. Mark’s, he earned the John H. Murrell Excellence in Teaching Award and, in 2009, he was one of only 50 teachers in the United States to earn the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement instruction.
Joe is frequently spotted early in the morning working with students on challenging math problems and providing extra guidance and encouragement. It is not uncommon to find him spending nights and weekends working with his AB Calculus boys to prepare them for the BC Advanced Placement exam. He is routinely spotted in the stands at more St. Mark’s athletic events than is seemingly possible, whether at home or on the road in Houston, Austin, Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, and beyond. A truly gifted teacher and inspirational leader, Joe has consistently set the highest standards of excellence for students and colleagues alike.
The Class of 2016 selected him to deliver the Baccalaureate address, a moving and memorable speech reminding the boys to always come “home” to St. Mark’s as they go out into the world as men.
