St. Mark’s Mourns Devoted Administrator

St. Mark’s School of Texas mourns the loss of Katy Booras Rubarth, who passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021, after a long battle with cancer.

Katy initially joined the St. Mark's community as a school parent, paving the way for all three of her boys, Andy ’16, Charlie ’20, and Oliver ’25, to become Marksmen. In 2009, she took on an important leadership position as a member of the School's advancement team, becoming Director of Communications. In the years that followed, Katy provided invaluable behind-the-scenes support for many of the School's most significant milestones and priorities. From the redevelopment and expansion of the St. Mark's website to her visible presence at major events across the country including Commencement, Reunions, Alumni Weekend, Homecoming, and so much more, Katy could always be found somewhere in the room choreographing, planning, and supporting others to ensure that every detail was in place.

“Katy loved her colleagues, our graduates, and most important, she loved our boys,” said David Dini, Eugene McDermott Headmaster, in a message to the community. “Her passing will certainly leave a hole in our lives. And yet, she would expect us to carry on and continue to serve every Marksman with the same determination, compassion, respect, and optimism that so epitomized how she lived each day.”

A naturally creative writer and gifted communicator, Katy was in her element at St. Mark's. With her Middlebury College English degree and grammarian eye always in tow, Katy was a force of nature. She led gracefully, with a determined spirit that lifted and inspired everyone around her. Failure was not part of Katy's vocabulary, as she saw every obstacle and challenge as simply another opportunity. For those of us who had the good fortune to work by Katy's side, we witnessed her infectious wit, her natural charm, her wicked creativity and strength, and most important, her indomitable spirit. Katy's imprint is felt across the St. Mark's campus, as she simply made us better.

Late last spring at the end of a very challenging year for our School community, the Class of 2020 dedicated the Marksmen yearbook to Katy. Marksmen Editor Reid Goldsmith said, "This dedicatee so perfectly fits the tone of this book and this year. She was selected because of the personal impact she had on all of our lives." The dedication page features a very meaningful photograph of Katy, taken by her son Charlie. The headline reads, "Living with Courage and Honor" in tribute to the years of strength, courage, determination, and leadership that she demonstrated in her daily life.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were touched by Katy's life, especially her three sons. May Katy's zest for life and her unyielding commitment to our School and its mission be an ongoing inspiration for us all.
