A Season of Gratitude
Before Marksmen departed for Thanksgiving Break, the School paused on Friday, November 20, to reflect on and express gratitude for the entire St. Mark’s community. While the School was unable to host its traditional Grandparents’ Day on campus, families near and far were invited to join students in watching a special All-School Convocation, livestreamed from the St. Mark’s Chapel.
“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the things for which we are grateful,” said Blake Hudspeth ’21, Student Council President. “I am grateful that each and every day, I have the opportunity to come to St. Mark’s and to be around such positive people. It’s easy to be negative about some of the things going on in our world today. However, Marksmen have an indomitable spirit of resilience to overcome the odds and push through adversity.”
Scott Gonzalez, Cecil H. and Ida Green Master Teaching Chair, encouraged everyone to approach the coming holidays with both care and optimism: “Thanksgiving is going to be weird this year. I, personally, am saddened by the fact that I will not be able to spend more time with my children, their spouses, and my grandkids. It’ll be the first time in my life that this has happened, and if we engage in proper behavior, if we love and respect ourselves and our loved ones enough to follow through with the protocols which help ameliorate the spread and virulent nature of COVID, perhaps it will be the last time that we’ll have to participate in such isolating behavior for years to come. And it is this hope that sets me free to enjoy what I see and have available to me.”
St. Mark’s will be closed for Thanksgiving Break November 23–27. Classes will be held virtually the week of November 30 – December 4, and all co-curricular activities will be suspended during this time.
