National Hispanic Recognition Program Honors Senior
Cristian Pereira ’21 has been selected for The College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). Cristian earned this recognition by scoring in the top 2.5% nationwide on the PSAT/NMSQT and attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of his junior year.
“I am most thankful to everyone who helped me achieve this — my teachers, my supportive friends, and my parents who work hard to be able to send me to St. Mark’s,” Cristian said. "I’ll always be in debt to St. Mark's. To me, this recognition is reflective of the quality of education this School has been able to provide for me."
The NHRP grants students academic honors that can be included in college applications. Colleges use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups who have excelled in the classroom and on their PSAT/NMSQT.
In a letter to Cristian, David Coleman, CEO of The College Board, said, “Colleges know that students who have earned this recognition are some of the most talented across the country.”
Each year the NHRP identifies approximately 7,000 of the highest-scoring Hispanic students from a nationwide total of about 250,000 high school juniors and invites them to apply for this recognition. Some universities award substantial scholarships to National Hispanic Scholars, often equal to National Merit Scholar recognition. Cristian is the eighth Marksman in the past five years to receive this honor.
"I hope other Marksmen prioritize hard work and strive to reach their goals," Cristian said. "The recognition will come, but it shouldn’t be the goal. The hard work I put in — that’s what I was most proud of."
In addition to the NHRP, Cristian has also been recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist.
