Remembering Our Marksmen
On October 28 and 29, 2020, members of the Middle and Upper School celebrated All Saints’ Day with a special chapel service. All Saints’ Day marks the beginning of November by honoring those who have passed away in the prior year.
During both services, Knobel Hunt ’21 and Rahul Banerjee ’21, co-chairs of the Upper School Chapel Council, honored members of the St. Mark’s community by reading aloud the names of Marksmen who had passed away. St. Mark’s Chaplain Stephen Arbogast discussed the importance of The Path to Manhood statue, featuring an Upper School student carrying a Lower School student on his shoulders, and how it serves as a daily reminder to celebrate every generation of Marksmen.
"We look at that statue in front of Centennial Hall and, while those figures have no names, they represent every Marksman. Today, we put names to those faces,” said Rev. Arbogast. “These names today are those who have carried the current generation of Marksmen on their shoulders. And someday, someone will remember you as, today, you remember and give honor to the men who have carried you on their shoulders.”
The celebration of All Saints’ Day with a chapel service is an annual St. Mark's tradition, allowing the community to pause and remember the lives of departed Marksmen.
