Representing USA at Chinese Competition

This fall, Warner Hartnett ’24 will represent the United States at the Chinese Bridge World Competition. Warner earned his spot after placing first in the DFW Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition held online in May.

At the DFW competition, Warner had to give a speech in Chinese and perform a talent rooted in Chinese culture. For his talent, Warner played the Chinese tanggu drum (堂鼓). During his speech, Warner said, “Today, when I am beating on my Chinese drum, the drumbeat and my heartbeat are one. We succeed together.”

Warner also competed in 2018, when he placed third despite being the only Middle School student competing.

“Warner knows what he wants to do with his Chinese language skills in his future,” said Dr. CJ Chiang, Warner’s advisor and Chinese teacher. “I am always very appreciative of our St. Mark’s parents who support their sons’ learning, as a Chinese teacher and an advisor.”

Warner has embraced the Chinese language and culture with a passion, beginning with his Chinese language studies in the fifth grade. Over spring break 2018, he traveled with his family to China to learn more about the country’s history and language.

“I hope that other Marksmen will feel encouraged by Warner’s achievement and will also try competing in the future,” said Grace Anderson, Middle & Upper School Chinese Teacher. “Like other students at St. Mark’s, Warner started taking Chinese when he was a fifth grader, and it is pretty amazing that he was able to place first in the DFW area for the Chinese Bridge Competition after only taking a few years of Chinese.”

The Chinese Bridge World Competition runs virtually from September 28 to November 5. Warner will be assessed on his Chinese language skills, knowledge of China’s national conditions, Chinese cultural skills, and comprehensive learning abilities.
