In January, more than a dozen aspiring diplomats from St. Mark’s traveled to the 67th session of the Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) in Boston, Massachusetts. With 4,000 delegates from all over the country and the globe in attendance, HMUN is one of the largest high school Model United Nations gatherings in the world.
“All of the work we do throughout the year leads up to the Harvard MUN. It’s like our Super Bowl,” said Aaryan Puri ’21, Co-Chair of St. Mark’s Model UN Club.
As a result of their hard work and thorough preparation, seven of the St. Mark’s delegates came home with major awards:
Michael Anderson ’21 and Reid Fundis ’21: Honorable Delegation Award, Human Rights Council, China
Ekansh Tambe ’22: Outstanding Delegate Award, Press Corps, The Wall Street Journal
Max Palys ’21: Outstanding Delegate Award, The Imperial Diwan of Mehmed II (Historical Committee)/Candarli Halil Pasha, The Grand Vizier
Isaac Song ’22 and Abhi Jain ’22: Honorable Delegation Award, Commission on Science and Technology for Development, China
Jackson Singhal ’20: Outstanding Delegate Award, Global Technology Summit, China
Other members of the traveling team included Noah Asmerom ’23, Matthew Schopmeyer ’21, Alam Alidina ’21, Aaryan Puri ’21, Pranay Sinkre ’22, Antonio Quiñones ’21, and Tomek Marczewski ’22.
Much of Model UN involves students studying and discussing the most pressing geopolitical issues and conflicts facing world leaders and diplomats. But, as Aaryan explained, the lessons students learn go well beyond politics: “A lot about MUN is working together to come to a solution and solve the problem at hand in a timely matter. MUN creates many opportunities to meet new people, and I think the ability to communicate with them and use knowledge and diplomacy to solve problems and write resolutions is something special that you can’t find anywhere else.”
While in Massachusetts, Marksmen took in the historic sights and sounds of downtown Boston and the campus of their host, Harvard University, as well as Massachusetts Institute of Technology in nearby Cambridge.
The St. Mark’s MUN Club is currently planning to host its own tournament, MARKMUN, on campus later this spring.
