Publications Earn National Acclaim
The National Scholastic Press Association recognized The ReMarker student newspaper and Focus magazine as finalists for its 2019 National Pacemaker Awards. St. Mark’s was one of the 49 schools nationwide with publications named as finalists for the Pacemakers, which are unofficially known as the “Pulitzer Prizes of student journalism.” Publications were evaluated on writing and reporting, photography, coverage, and visual design.
The ReMarker student newspaper received its 14th Pacemaker citation in 16 years, and the paper’s Focus magazine received its second consecutive citation. A newer addition to the St. Mark’s journalism program, Focus is a supplementary magazine published twice a year, with each issue centered on a single topic, like homelessness and gender identity.
"It's always gratifying to see the boys' work recognized nationally," said Ray Westbrook, Gene & Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair and St. Mark’s publications adviser. "I'm especially proud of the recognition given to Focus magazine. We launched this magazine with modest expectations and were blown away by the positive response from the St. Mark’s community. This magazine has become a voice for bringing important and sometimes difficult topics into the campus conversation.”
The 2018–2019 editor of The ReMarker was Kamal Mamdani ’19 and the editors of Focus were Nathan Han ’19 and Christopher Wang ’20.

“It is certainly gratifying to see our journalism students and the contributions that they make in our community recognized in this way,” said David W. The finalists in additional Pacemaker categories, like literary magazine, will be announced later. Winners of the Pacemaker awards will be announced at the organization’s annual fall convention in Washington, D.C., in November.
