114th School Year Begins

As the sun rose over 10600 Preston Road, 885 Marksmen arrived on campus for the first day of the 2019–2020 school year. Students and teachers reconnected, shared their summer stories, and dove into the new year. By midmorning, parent volunteers joined the dining services staff in firing up barbecue grills and preparing an outdoor lunch. Inside the Great Hall, students, faculty, and staff gathered for Opening Convocation.

Student Council President Taylor Hopkin ’20 welcomed the boys back from summer break and offered a special greeting to his new classmates. “Welcome to all of the new kids who are beginning their first day at St. Mark’s! We are so excited to have you here. To the returning Marksmen, I challenge you all to reach out to someone you don’t know today and make the new kids feel welcome. Part of what makes this community so special are the relationships. This year, let’s work on making this community and those relationships even stronger.”

Following a reading by Senior Class President Colin Campbell ’20, Eugene McDermott Headmaster David W. Dini welcomed students to the new year and encouraged the boys to strive for substance as well as meaning. “Of course, we want you to give your best effort every day and to take responsibility for yourself and for the wellbeing of others. As we begin this new year together and search for even greater meaning and fulfillment in our lives, I encourage you to remain focused on the quality, values, and character traits that will help you become your best selves. Remember, it’s not what you achieve but who you are that counts the most.”
