Marksman Named National Journalist of the Year
Parker Davis ’19, managing editor of The ReMarker student newspaper, has been named the 2019 National High School Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Educators Associations and National Scholastic Press Association (JEA/NSPA). In March 2019, the JEA/NSPA named Parker the Texas High School Journalist of the Year, making him the seventh consecutive Marksman to earn the state title. He is the first Marksman to win the national title.
“I am incredibly proud of Parker and of his many contributions across campus,” said David W. Dini, Eugene McDermott Headmaster. “It is deeply gratifying to see him earn not only statewide, but also national recognition for the work that he and his fellow Marksmen invest in student journalism. The ReMarker has been an important touchstone in our community for more than sixty years. Our students embrace the sense of responsibility inherent in publishing news and, most importantly, in addressing substantive and often challenging topics to prompt community-wide dialogue and help students learn, grow, and better understand different perspectives.”
For the competition, Parker assembled an in-depth digital portfolio of his journalistic work, including examples of his writing, editing, photography, print design, and leadership. As the JEA noted in their announcement, Parker mentors underclassmen on staff, assists in leading day-to-day operations of the publication, oversees production of all sections of the newspaper and writes either a cover story or main story for each issue.
“I find that innate ability to identify a good story for our readers has been a hallmark of Parker’s journalistic career,” said Ray Westbrook, Gene & Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair, and the advisor for The ReMarker newspaper and the Marksmen yearbook. “He told his stories with raw honesty and depth. In other words, Parker’s words connect with the reader.”
“Every step of the process from news gathering to publication continues to bring out the best in me," Parker wrote in his application essay. "Through each interview, I’ve gained a new perspective, one I will value and consider long after the story has been sent to print. In the end, that’s the essence of journalism.”

Parker has been an active member and leader of The ReMarker throughout his Upper School career. While he began his senior year as an executive page editor, Parker's persistence, attention to detail, and ability to aptly tackle difficult topics soon earned him the title of managing editor.
