Publications Sweep National Awards

St. Mark’s student publications recently collected an impressive sweep of awards and accolades from both state and national organizations.

At the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s convention at Columbia University in New York, six publications from the 2023-2024 school year received prestigious Crown awards, which are given to the top scholastic publications in the country:

Jenny Dial Creech advises all four journalism publications. Lynne Schwartz advises The Marque, and Dr. Dan Lipin advises The Scientific Marksman.

Creech was individually recognized by Columbia University and awarded a Centennial Alumni Award for her work in the fields of professional and educational journalism. She also received a Centennial Service Award for her dedication to scholastic journalism for the past two decades. Creech spoke at the conference on several topics, including media bias, on which she has recently published research.

“My goal in studying media bias was to create curriculum for other journalism teachers to take back to their classrooms and pass to their students,” Creech said. “I am always inspired by the thoughtful conversations I have with my students at St. Mark’s on this topic, and I hope I can help other educators have this meaningful dialogue in their own classrooms.”

On the state level, student journalists earned a slew of awards from the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC), the journalism arm of the University Interscholastic League. The ReMarker Editor-in-Chief Hilton Sampson ’25 was named Newspaper Editor of the Year; Marksmen Editor-in-Chief Teddy Fleiss ’25 was named Runner-up in the Yearbook Editor of the Year competition; and smremarker.com Editor-in-Chief Will Clifford ’25 was runner-up in the prestigious Texas Journalist of the Year competition.

This year’s ReMarker won a Gold Star, making it one of the top five newspapers in the state. The newspaper website, smremarker.com, was awarded a Silver Star, putting it among the top 10. The 2024 Marksmen yearbook won a Silver Star as well, placing it among the top yearbooks in the state.

Across a range of Individual Achievement Awards, from feature writing to podcasting, Marksmen earned 24 first-place, nine second-place, and 11 third-place finishes, and seven honorable mentions. Some of these winners were further honored with the ILPC’s "Tops in Texas Award":
