Admission Director Recognized

Every Marksman’s journey begins in the Office of Admission. This team in Nearburg Hall is responsible for identifying, recruiting, and retaining boys who will succeed and thrive at St. Mark’s. For nearly two decades, David Baker has led this team to tremendous success, as seen in both the School’s impressive admission metrics and through the even more impressive caliber of boys who become Marksmen.

For his dedication to St. Mark’s and to his professional field, the Enrollment Management Association (EMA) presented David Baker with the Everett E. Gourley Award at its national conference in San Diego on September 13, 2018. Named for former Director of Admission and Assistant Headmaster of the Asheville School, the Gourley Award is given each year to an educator whose interest in students and concern for colleagues is an inspiration to those who serve in admission.

“The Enrollment Management Association played a critical role in my development, and I’m honored to have been given the opportunity to contribute,” David said in accepting the award. “What we do has never been more important. As the EMA reminds us, when great schools enroll great students, anything is possible.”

David Baker joined St. Mark’s in 1984 as the coach of the debate team. In 1999, he was appointed the School’s Director of Admission. David has served as President of the Independent Schools Admission Association of Dallas and is a faculty member of EMA’s Admission Training Institute, serving as a teacher and mentor for new admission professionals. He is also the father of Evan ’17.
