Marksman Wins National Spelling Bee
For correctly spelling the word “Dasyuridae,” Sohum Sukhatankar ’24 earned the title of national champion at the 2018 South Asian Spelling Bee. After winning the Dallas regional championship in June, Sohum advanced to the national finals on August 2 at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His national title comes less than three months after being named one of the Top 30 spellers at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sohum is now a veteran of national spelling bee competitions. Last year, he advanced to the second round of the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The South Asian Spelling Bee is open to any student between the ages of 8 and 14, who has at least one parent or grandparent of South Asian descent. Seven regional competitions are held throughout the United States, including Dallas. More than 600 spellers competed this year, with 24 advancing to the finals. The South Asian Spelling Bee has been aired in over 120 countries on Sony Entertainment Television Asia.

For the record, “Dasyuridae” is a family of polyprotodont marsupials that includes the native cats, pouched mice, banded anteater, Tasmanian devil, and related forms.
