Putting the “A” in STEAM
On Thursday, January 19, 2017, the Parents’ Associations of St. Mark’s and Hockaday came together on the Hockaday campus for their annual general membership meeting. The meeting also featured the special panel discussion Putting the “A” in STEAM. Veteran journalist Lee Cullum led the discussion that centered on the importance of incorporating the arts into the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The panel included Nancy A. Nasher (Hockaday ’72), art collector, philanthropist, and NorthPark Center President; Stuart Ravnik, Ph.D., Associate Dean, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, UT Southwestern Medical Center; Dhruba Deb, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Researcher, Therapeutic Oncology, UT Southwestern Medical Center and founder and guest editor for Art and Cancer; and David Hudgins ’83, award-winning Screenwriter and Executive Producer of Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, and Hulu's new series Shut Eye.
Following the morning panel discussion, members of the St. Mark’s and Hockaday Parents’ Associations voted on their 2017–2018 Executive Committee Slates. After the meeting, David Hudgins visited St. Mark’s and spoke with students in journalism and film studies classes about his career as a successful television writer, producer, and showrunner.
“My arts experience at St. Mark’s formed me greatly. I remember Herb Meyer teaching me Shakespeare and Anne Freeman teaching me how to write,” David told students during a special Upper School assembly in Decherd Auditorium. “I first started my interest in the arts right here in this room, beginning in the seventh grade in the play Fiddler on the Roof.”
After graduating from St. Mark’s and Duke University, David spent several years as a trial lawyer in Dallas. Following the untimely death of his sister from breast cancer, David moved to Tennessee to pursue his passion for writing, leading to a career in television. He also heads the Catherine Tuck Foundation, which raises money for cancer research in memory of his sister.
