Senior Trains Guide Dogs
Henry Roberts ’17 and his yellow Labrador guide dog in training, Dutch, were invited to Globe Life Park earlier this month for a special presentation. The pair was met on the field by Texas Ranger Derek “Dutch Oven” Holland, who presented Henry with a $5,000 check to sponsor his namesake dog, Dutch.
After training a guide dog for the blind as part of his Eagle Scout project, Henry fell in love with the program and is now training his fifth dog.
“Training dogs has been a great experience for me and my family,” Henry said. “It means a lot to us when our dogs graduate and go to assist a blind person. I have learned better public speaking skills as I gave presentations and I am a better person because of this project.”
As training dogs is a full-time responsibility, Dutch is a common sight on campus, even accompanying Henry to class, where he can sometimes be found catching a quick nap under Henry’s seat.
