111th School Year Begins

On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, St. Mark’s School of Texas welcomed 865 boys to campus for its 110th first day of school. Across 10600 Preston Road, students filed into class, greeted their teachers, and got to know their classmates. As the morning got underway, the student body joined the faculty and staff in the W. W. Browning, Jr., Great Hall for this year’s Opening Convocation.

Board of Trustees President Jon Mosle ’79 welcomed students to the new year and encouraged them to explore all of the possibilities and experiences the School provides: “St. Mark’s is an awfully good place to find something you love. This School, the teachers, the facilities, and your classmates are here to help you find something you love.”

Student Council President Christian McClain ’17 shared his excitement for the new year: “St. Mark’s is like a home to me. It’s where I get to see all of my friends, teachers, and coaches everyday. A positive attitude really is contagious, so when you come to school tomorrow, come excited, because it’s going to be a great day.”

Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini began his remarks by welcoming the new students to their first day at St. Mark’s and congratulating some faculty members who were honored at the end of the 2015–2016 school year. He also celebrated two incredible faculty milestones, as Frank Jordan and JT Sutcliffe each begin their fiftieth year of teaching.

Adding to Mr. Mosle’s challenge to try new things, Mr. Dini discussed the importance of striving even in the face of adversity. “As we begin this new school year, I want you to remember that you are not defined by your abilities and accomplishments, as important as they are. Rather, you’re all defined by the content of your character. I have every confidence that you will thrive and contribute in ways that will make this community better."
