St. Mark's in Australia

This past July, several St. Mark’s faculty and staff members journeyed to Melbourne, Australia, for the International Boys School Coalition annual conference. St. Mark’s has sent representatives since the conference’s inception in 1994 and this year’s gathering marked the 19th annual meeting. Eugene McDermott Headmaster Arnie Holtberg, accompanied by faculty and staff members Bryon Lawson, Amy Reck, Sherri Darver, Kathryn Shoeberlein, Verna Smith, and Julia Dade, made the trip to Australia to engage in stimulating conversation about the education of the modern boy with fellow faculty and administrators of all-boys schools from around the world.

The conference’s focus was “Unearthing Creativity” and featured dozens of workshops, seminars, and keynote speakers. Overall, the members of the St. Mark’s community who attended the conference came back from Australia enlightened and enriched having learned new ways to address the education of boys and having been comforted, as Amy Reck observed, that “despite [their] differences, geographic and otherwise, boys all over the world are really quite similar.”

The 2013 conference will be held in Richmond, Virginia, about 7000 miles closer to 10600 Preston Road.
