Hoffman Named Life Trustee

On Thursday evening, April 28, the Board of Trustees honored Robert K. Hoffman ’65 as the school's newest Life Trustee. Nearly one-hundred and fifty current and former Trustees gathered at the Crescent Court Hotel for the annual Trustee Dinner to recognize Mr. Hoffman for his extraordinary service to St. Mark's and the Board of Trustees.

Robert accomplished a great deal while a student at St. Mark's – Cum Laude, National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, Golf team, Editor in Chief of The ReMarker, and Valedictorian. After graduating from St. Mark's, Robert attended Harvard University where he joined The Harvard Lampoon. Before graduation from Harvard, Robert along with two colleagues, Doug Kenney and Henry Beard, launched The National Lampoon and served as the managing editor.

At National Lampoon Robert worked with writers Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Christopher Guest, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Gilda Radner, among others. "As we know, Robert's work on The National Lampoon shaped humor in the United States for an entire generation," said former Board President and Life Trustee Tony Roosevelt.

Hoffman and his partners sold The National Lampoon in 1975. Robert earned his Harvard MBA and was a Baker Scholar. He then joined his father Edmund Hoffman at The Coca-Cola Bottling Group (Southwest) Inc. During his 25 year tenure with Coca-Cola Bottling Group, the company grew approximately one-hundred fold to become both the fifth largest Coca-Cola bottler in the United States and the fifth largest Dr. Pepper bottler in the states.

In early 1992, then Mayor Steve Bartlett and the Dallas City Council, asked Robert to chair The Dallas Plan, the $6.6 billion, 30-year blueprint for reshaping and renewing Dallas for the 21st century. The Dallas Plan was formally adopted by the City Council in 1994. Plans included the Trinity River Project, an expanded Arts District downtown, revitalization of White Rock Lake, Fair Park, and other city assets, as well as economic and recreational development in South Dallas.

Robert, along with his wife Marguerite, has been a very active civic and community leader for many years. While he serves on the boards of many organizations, Robert has been most notably engaged in the advancement of the cultural arts in Dallas. Robert commented at the Trustee Dinner, "My lifelong devotion to art began in ninth grade on the second floor of Davis Hall in Tom Adams's history class, the very class where we delighted in getting the first year teacher, a very young art history major from Princeton, off the subject by creating mythical football teams composed of famous artists."

During his nearly three decade tenure on the St. Mark's Board, Robert served in just about every capacity imaginable including Chairman of the Executive Committee and President of the Board. Along with Robert Decherd ’69, Bennett Cullum ’67, and Ley Waggoner ’64, Robert was instrumental in founding the St. Mark's Alumni Association in the 1970's. He also served as its President.

St. Mark's School of Texas is proud to honor this extraordinary alumnus by naming him a Life Trustee.
