WRESTLING On Saturday, January 25, the St. Mark’s varsity wrestlers competed in the Texas Prep State Duals at St. John’s School in Houston. In the first team pool, SM defeated Kinkaid School and lost to St. Thomas Catholic School. In the second pool, the Lions narrowly defeated Cornerstone Christian School of San Antonio, lost to Episcopal Houston, and finished with a victory over Fort Worth Country Day School. Not having three weight classes filled always spots the opponents with 18 points. However, the toughness of the Lion wrestlers always makes up for those points. SOCCER Last week, the varsity soccer team put together a comfortable win over Trinity Valley School on Tuesday on the back of two goals from senior captain Aydin Sumer. The first, a penalty in the middle of the first half, came when co-captain Alden Reagins was knocked over while he tried to slip through defenders in the opposing box. Sumer promptly stepped up and buried the kick to make it 1-0. Though the score remained close, the game was decidedly lopsided. The Lions posted at least 20 goal-scoring chances as the TVS goalkeeper put up a heroic defense. However, Sumer broke through for the insurance goal in the second half on a through ball from senior Eduardo Mousinho. The Lions played it clinically the rest of the way.
Missing some key personnel, the Lions traveled out to Fort Worth Country Day School on Friday, and the result was a frustrating 2-2 draw. The Falcons scored first when the Lions turned the ball over cheaply in the defensive third. However, the Lions struck back only minutes later when Reagins streaked down the right flank and laced a ball across the goal mouth for David Dickson to tap in. The rest of the first half was an even contest. In the second half, though, the Lions slowly seized the upper hand, playing most of the match on the Country Day side of things. However, an altercation in the middle of the half led to send-offs for both teams, rendering the match a 10 versus 10 affair. In the wide-open struggle that ensued, the Falcons could slip a ball in behind on a counter, seizing the advantage with 15 minutes to go. However, the Lions struck back almost immediately when Reagins flipped a ball into the box for senior defender Ethan Zhang to drive into the back of the net. The last ten minutes saw multiple chances for the Lions to go ahead. At one point, sophomore JP Hanks crossed the ball to the back post for Reagins to flick on. The ball actually beat the keeper, only to be cleared off the line. Ultimately, the match ended in a draw. This week, the soccer team plays three SPC Counter matches. The Lions host Oakridge on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and then travel to Austin to take on St. Andrew’s on Friday night and St. Stephen’s on Saturday afternoon.
BASKETBALL Last week, St. Mark’s varsity basketball team played a pair of SPC counter contests. The first game, on Wednesday, January 22, ushered in a new era of Marksmen athletics, as the team took to the floor in the newly inaugurated Zierk Athletic Center’s Hicks Gym. Numerous legends from St. Mark’s illustrious history were on hand to honor Marcy Adams and celebrate the naming of the basketball court after her late husband and long-time SM teacher/coach, Tom Adams. The team played with tremendous enthusiasm, and the first points ever scored in the new gym came by way of an exciting slam dunk from senior Luke Laczkowski, who led all scorers with 21 points. Senior Matthew Jordan also reached double figures, as did junior Spencer Hopkin. A pair of fourth-quarter threes from junior Cooper Guiler helped put the finishing touches on a fabulous all-around night for Lion Nation. Two days later, the squad would head to Fort Worth to play against the only other undefeated SPC North Zone team, Ft. Worth Country Day. Sophomores Dawson Battie (18 points and 11 rebounds) and Asher Collins (12 points and 6 rebounds) spearheaded an interior attack to help forge a ten-point 1st-quarter lead for St. Mark’s. Senior Luke Laczkowski posted 24 points, and classmate Henry Estes rounded out the Lions front court that dominated the smaller Falcons en route to a convincing victory. The Lions are now 4-0 in SPC play with three games this week (Oakridge at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s in Austin this weekend).
SWIMMING The St. Mark’s varsity swimmers took on cross-town rivals Greenhill this past week, and it was another good day of racing for the Lions. The Lions defeated Greenhill 87-83 with notable swims from Ethan Wang, who set a pool record in the 100 Breast, and two notable DQs by junior Oliver Geheb for an early departure on what would have been the 1st place relays. Up next, the Lions take on St. Stephen’s (Austin, TX) in the new Levering Pool in the Zierk Athletic Center for senior night on Thursday, January 30. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
