Campus Bells to Ring
The sound of bells ringing will soon fill the St. Mark’s campus as installation of the new Roosevelt Family Carillon begins on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 in the St. Mark’s Chapel Tower. A gift from the family of Life Trustee Mr. Elliott “Tony” Roosevelt, Jr., the twenty-five bell Carillon comes from one of the world’s leading bell companies, the Verdin Bell Company of Cincinnati, Ohio and the Petit and Fristen Bellfoundry in the Netherlands. Necessary improvements to the Chapel Tower were made possible by a gift from Mr. Robert Sinclair ’74, Board of Trustees Vice President, and his family.
There will be limited disruption on campus near the Chapel beginning on January 5, as a large crane will be used to lift the bells and support structure into the Chapel Tower during the first 5-7 days of the three-week installation. For safety reasons, the area around the staging site will be roped off to restrict access and a security officer will stand guard during the day at the site. The last two weeks of the installation will be limited to the interior of the Chapel Tower and thus will not disrupt campus life. If you are on campus between Wednesday, January 5 and Tuesday, January 11, please avoid this area near the Chapel Tower if at all possible.
Installation of the Roosevelt Family Carillon should be completed before month’s end. The Carillon is a musical instrument that can be played either manually on a keyboard similar to a piano or electronically through a programmable computer. The bells can peal, toll, and play a wide range of musical selections both on a routine basis as well as for special occasions.
The new Carillon, when completed, will clearly add a new dimension to campus life.
