School Mourns Iconic Staff Member
St. Mark’s School of Texas mourns the passing of Steve “Hollywood” Walker, an icon on campus, who passed away on April 3, 2023. Walker retired from St. Mark’s in 2021 after serving the School with dedication, passion and commitment for 45 years as a member of the cafeteria staff. Having joined St. Mark’s in 1975, Walker was one of the longest-tenured staff members in the School’s history.
A true legend known to all Marksmen he encountered, Walker was a fixture of the St. Mark’s community. Whether working behind the scenes or out front sharing a warm smile and invaluable life advice, Walker spent the entirety of his career caring for every young man who walked the campus as if he was his own.
In a 2012 ReMarker interview, Walker said, “Since I don’t have any kids, you all are my sons. Every last one of you. Y’all kids are the whole key to being here. Y’all are what keeps me working.”
Walker’s dedication to the School and willingness to support “his boys” through the decades was exemplary. Upon reaching 40 years of service, the alumni community celebrated Walker’s contributions during the 2015 Spring Alumni Dinner.
“Steve, you’ve spent your entire career at St. Mark’s, and we’ve heard you loud and clear saying that your boys mean everything to you,” said David Campbell ’86, Alumni Association president (2013-2015). “I hope you hear us equally clearly tonight. Steve, you mean everything to us.”
After his retirement in 2021, many in the St. Mark’s community stayed in close contact with Walker. Earlier this year, students and faculty alike signed and presented an iconic St. Mark’s cafeteria tray to show their support of the man that meant so much to so many.
