Student Diplomats Compete at Harvard

In January 2022, a dozen aspiring diplomats from St. Mark’s traveled to the 69th session of the Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) in Boston, Massachusetts. With more than 4,000 delegates from across the country and world in attendance, HMUN is one of the largest high school Model United Nations gatherings in the world.

“Each trip to Harvard MUN is a chance for our Club to compete with the best of the best,” said Pranay Sinkre ’22, President of the St. Mark’s Model UN Club. “We relish the chance to test our mettle against some of the best MUN clubs from around the world and learn new techniques that we can implement at local conferences.”

As a result of their hard work and thorough preparation, three St. Mark’s delegates came home with major awards:

  • Tomek Marczewski ’22 for Best Delegate (1st place in his committee)
  • Roome Becker ’23 for Honorable Mention (3rd place in his committee)
  • Arjun Poi ’25 for Honorable Mention (3rd place in his committee)

Other members of the traveling team included Noah Asmerom ’23, Alexander Ball ’24, Matthew Chen ’24, William Clarke ’24, Jordan Feldman ’24, Rahul Gunukula ’22, Myles Lowenberg ’23, Pranay Sinkre ’22, and Isaac Song ’22.

Much of Model UN involves students studying and discussing the most pressing real-world geopolitical issues and conflicts facing world leaders and diplomats, while taking on the roles of those actually involved. Using parliamentary procedure, persuasive speeches, and informal caucusing, MUN delegates work together to craft resolutions and find solutions to major international problems like climate change, mass migration, or threats of war.

“The more we become aware of countries, cultures, and perspectives other than our own, the more successful we can become at cooperating with others and addressing the challenges we face in common,” said David Fischer, St. Mark’s History and Social Sciences Department Chair and Model UN advisor. “Participation in MUN is a great way for boys to learn about current events and develop an awareness of and empathy for societies and cultures that are not their own.”

Dr. Andrea Hamilton (Upper School History Teacher) and Josh Shandera (Upper School College Counselor) accompanied the team to Boston. During their free time, the Marksmen walked the Freedom Trail and visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they connected with freshman Blake Hudspeth ’21.
