Teachers Share Their Craft
At the end of June, eight St. Mark’s teachers and administrators traveled to Montréal, Canada, to attend and contribute to the 2019 International Boys Schools Coalition (IBSC) Annual Conference hosted by Selwyn House School. The theme of the conference this year was “Boys and the Arts: Great Minds, Big Hearts,” which put the focus on the importance of arts education in boys’ schools and its unique ability to foster and improve the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of the boys, the faculty, and the other members of those communities.
Through this lens, St. Mark’s faculty made presentations about some of the innovative lessons and programs taking place on campus. Dr. Martin Stegemoeller conducted a workshop titled “Art and the Essence of Character Education,” which highlighted the role that art, literature, publications, and drama play in St. Mark’s Character and Leadership Education program. Lower School Librarian Barbara Kinkead and Lower School Spanish teacher Emma Noble shared the results of their action research project titled “Making Connections: Creating and Strengthening Grade 3 Community Bonds Through Family History Stories.” They highlighted the ability of family narratives to broaden and deepen the sense of belonging and community among the St. Mark’s Class of 2029.

The IBSC includes several hundred schools from more than 20 countries and fosters collaboration between professional educators. St. Mark’s has been a member from the beginning, and, over the past few decades, the School has cultivated a long and significant relationship with the Coalition. The 2020 IBSC Annual Conference will travel to Barcelona, Spain, where Viaró Global School will be its host, and, in 2021, St. Mark’s School of Texas will host the conference in Dallas.
