Mr. Cox Receives Rogers Award

At the Upper School Final Assembly, the Alumni Association honored David Cox as the 2019 recipient of the Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award. The award recognizes a member of the faculty and staff for their outstanding contributions above and beyond their responsibilities in the classroom.

“Over the past decade, Mr. Cox has been an asset to the St. Mark’s community, helping define excellence in the Foreign Language Department,” said Eugene McDermott Headmaster David W. Dini in presenting the award.

Since Mr. Cox arrived at St. Mark’s in 2009, the Latin program has continued to grow and thrive. He has taught Latin, AP Latin, and Latin Honors: A Survey of Roman History and Literature, and, when students expressed an interest in learning Greek, he introduced that language as well.

“David Cox's passion for his subject and his care and concern for his students inspire the boys to love Classics and to love him,” said Dr. Zachary Erin, Language Department Chair. “He is an excellent teacher, a fine colleague, and a true asset to the Language Department.”

As sponsor of Sodalitas Classica Sancti Marci (“St. Mark’s Classics Club”), Mr. Cox has helped Middle and Upper School Marksmen master Latin through local and statewide competitions. This year, the Classics Club even hosted its first competition at St. Mark’s, Annual Lion Invitational Certamen. A gifted linguist, Mr. Cox has also led a Middle School French club and currently sponsors the Italian Club.

“The students know that David is concerned for their individual growth, not only as students of Latin, but also as a young men of character,” said Nancy Marmion, J. J. Connolly Master Teaching Chair, who served as Language Department Chair from 1994–2018. “He makes the ancient authors relevant to twenty-first-century students.”

The Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award was established by the St. Mark’s Alumni Association in 1998 to honor faculty and staff for their pioneering contributions to the School community in academic, athletic and extracurricular areas that go above and beyond the confines of their job descriptions, thus extending the boundaries of the learning experience for St. Mark’s students.
