The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) announced its annual Crown Awards, honoring the top student publications in the nation. Once again, St. Mark’s students swept their respective categories, bringing home three Gold Crowns and one Silver Crown:
The ReMarker student newspaper won its 16th consecutive Gold Crown (a CSPA record)
The Marque Upper School literary magazine won its sixth consecutive Gold Crown
The Mini-Marque Middle School literary magazine won its third Gold Crown
The Marksmen yearbook won a Silver Crown, its tenth consecutive Crown Award
These awards represent thousands of combined hours invested by dozens of students in crafting world-class publications. The ReMarker newspaper tackled both campus news and tough issues, including financial aid, underage substance abuse, and the ongoing debate over Dallas’s Confederate monuments. The Marksmen yearbook chronicled the 2017–2018 year at St. Mark’s, from achievements and traditions to student perspectives and memories. The Marque literary magazine served as a platform for Upper School students to express their creativity, publishing poetry, photography, visual art, and creative writing. And The Mini-Marque provided a similar platform for Middle School students, creating a smaller, equally engaging literary magazine. It was also one of only two Middle School magazines to receive a prestigious Gold Crown.
“Our magazine was completed by seventh- and eighth-grade students who come to us with little or no experience in publications,” said Middle School Humanities teacher Danielle Clayton, who serves as one of The Mini-Marque’s faculty advisor. “They had to work together to learn complicated publication software, while rating submissions from the entire Middle School, designing spreads to showcase those selections, and organizing the spreads under the magazine’s themes. The fact that the magazine has garnered such success when it is competing against many high school publications speaks volumes about the boys’ dedication and hard work.”
Congratulations to all of the Marksmen who worked on these publications, including the leadership of The ReMarker editor Kobe Roseman ’18, Marksmen editor Omar Rana ’18, The Marque editors CJ Crawford ’19 and Matthew Coleman ’19, and The Mini-Marque editors Alex Geng ’22 and Jeffrey Chen ’22.
For the 2017–2018 publications, Ray Westbrook, Gene & Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair, served as the faculty advisor to The ReMarker and the Marksmen;Lynne Schwartz, Trustee Master Teaching Chair in Humanities, and GayMarie Vaughan served as faculty advisors to The Marque; and Danielle Clayton and Meagan Frazier served as faculty advisors to The Mini-Marque.
