Marksmen Practice Diplomacy at Harvard

A group of Marksmen recently traveled to Boston to enhance their research, speaking, and debating skills at the 2025 Harvard Model United Nations Conference (HMUN). The members of St. Mark’s Model United Nations Club, accompanied by history teachers David Fisher and Andrea Hamilton, joined more than 3,000 students from schools across the world to discuss creative solutions to current global problems.

Four Marksmen received awards for their diplomatic skills:

  • Reagan Graeme ’26 won a Best Delegation award for the role of Philippe Bunau-Varilla in the Panama Canal 1904 Crisis Committee.
  • Arjun Poi ’25 won a Best Delegation award for the role of a time-traveling Che Guevara in the Ad Hoc Crisis Committee.
  • Tarik Syed ’26 and Andrew Liu ’26 shared an Honorable Delegation award for the roles of Peruvian diplomats in the Disarmament and International Security Committee.

HMUN is a four-day international relations simulation that gives high school students the opportunity to learn about diplomacy. Students represent different countries on a variety of committees and work together to create resolutions to major international problems such as climate change, mass migration, and threats of war.

Participating in MUN helps Marksmen become better-informed students and more responsible global citizens.

“MUN encourages boys to take on the perspective of people and societies different from their own and to appreciate the value of teamwork and negotiation in addressing global dilemmas,” said David Fisher, St. Mark’s History & Social Sciences Department Chair and Model UN Sponsor. “MUN is not only a fun experience and an exercise in imagination but is also a vehicle for learning skills essential for successful global citizenship in the 21st century."

During their trip, the students also toured the campuses of MIT and Harvard and visited with several St. Mark’s alumni.
