Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

As flood waters recede from the Texas coast, the St. Mark’s community is answering the calls for help. Beginning Monday, September 11, the St. Mark’s Community Service Board is holding their annual Clothing Drive. Through Friday, September 22, community members can drop off new or gently used clothing during carpool before and after school. Donated clothes will be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and, from there, will be sent to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

 

In addition, the Lower School will be collecting gift cards from Monday, September 11, through Monday, September 25. Students are invited to bring gift cards valued between $10–$25 from Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, or Home Depot. After the cards are collected, students will sign a message that will accompany the box of cards to the Gulf Coast.

 

“Thanks to so many of you who have expressed care, concern, and a desire to be supportive of our friends in south and southeast Texas who have been hard-hit by Hurricane Harvey over the past few days,” Eugene McDermott Headmaster David W. Dini said in a letter to the community following Harvey’s landfall. “It has been heartbreaking to witness the human tragedy but also inspiring to see citizens pulling together to support one another in such trying times.”

 

As the clean-up and recovery efforts continue, St. Mark’s is partnering with local agencies to determine how to be most helpful to those directly affected by this storm. In addition, the School is working in concert with the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) to offer assistance to displaced students, should that be necessary.

 

The Red Cross is on the front line in direct response to the storm, and financial contributions to this organization certainly make a difference.
