On Wednesday, August 16, St. Mark’s faculty and staff returned to campus to officially begin the 2017–2018 school year. After gathering together for a Chapel service and meeting, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch generously provided and hosted by the Parents’ Association.
In the afternoon, several teachers hosted special learning sessions, where they shared some of their summer experiences and best practices for the year ahead.
“This is a great way to start the year,” said Latin teacher David Cox. “Not only do we get to learn practical and inspirational information but we also get to collaborate with colleagues from different divisions and departments who we wouldn’t normally see.”
One session explored a peer coaching model of teaching, where teachers role-played as a small group of students offering each other constructive feedback. Another session provided insight into the unique opportunities of teaching around a Harkness table. One Lower School teacher shared the presentation she gave at this year’s International Boys’ School Coalition summer conference.
Faculty also shared their summer travel experiences, including the Choir Trip to England and the Photography Trip to Bhutan. One science teacher even reflected on the journey she took tracing hemophilia through the royal families of Europe.
Collaboration has been a growing area of focus for the St. Mark’s faculty, as every teacher works together to further the School’s mission and transform boys into men.
