Alumni Return to Campus
Alumni Weekend 2017 brought together Marksmen from eight decades as they returned to campus to reconnect with one another, their former teachers, and their alma mater. Nearly 1,200 alumni and guests attended the weekend’s festivities from April 20–22, including the golf tournament, alumni classes, Spring Alumni Dinner, the family cookout, and class reunions.
On Thursday, April 20, alumni, faculty, trustees, and friends began the weekend at the annual Alumni Golf Tournament. More than 100 golfers enjoyed a day on the links, followed by an awards reception at Brookhaven Country Club. This year, the winning teams were awarded the inaugural Ivan Irwin, Jr. ’50 Cup. Marwin Brown ’90, Eric Loehr ’91, Chris Turner ’91, and Ron Turner shot the lowest net score, while Ivan Irwin, Jr. ’50 and his team of Todd Cornelius, Taylor Irwin, and Brock Robertson earned the highest gross score.
On Friday, hundreds of alumni and guests joined students on campus for a day of classes. Alumni attended special lessons taught by Tom Adams, Master Teacher Emeritus; JT Sutcliffe, Suzanne and Patrick McGee Family Master Teaching Chair in Mathematics; and John Ashton, Associate Headmaster. Throughout the day, several Middle and Upper School teachers hosted Open Classes, offering alumni the chance to observe the modern classroom. Alumni Chapel homilist Richard Mullen, Jr. ’87, reflected on the impact St. Mark’s has had on his life. Wrapping up the day on campus, alumni and students had the opportunity to hear from Ross Perot, Jr. ’77, Chairman of The Perot Companies and Hillwood, and David McAtee ’87, Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel for AT&T Inc., during the Alumni Panel Discussion: Leadership in Business, moderated by Andrew Lin ’17.
“The great foundation of my life was my twelve years at St. Mark’s,” Mr. Perot told the audience. “When I got to Vanderbilt, I was amazed how much I had already learned at St. Mark’s.”
Friday evening was a night of recognition for several special faculty and alumni as more than 375 alumni and guests gathered in the W. W. Browning, Jr., Great Hall for the 21st annual Spring Alumni Dinner. Retiring faculty and staff members Virginia Arsers, Sally Stephens, May Sykes, Janet Wadkins, and Warren Foxworth ’66 were honored for their service to the School. David Brown, Kevin Dilworth, and Warren Foxworth ’66 were announced as the finalists for the Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award. In recognition of their dedication to the School, the Alumni Board named Seth Collins ’02 as this year’s Young Alumni Service Citation recipient and Taylor Wilson ’81 as the 15th recipient of the Alumni Service Medal. The evening featured a tribute to two members of the St. Mark’s community who have each served the School for 40 years: Curtis Smith and Howard Stewart.
“Alumni Weekend is about gratitude. We are grateful for the lessons St. Mark’s has taught us through the years and for the lifelong relationships we’ve formed with both friends and faculty,” said Alan Schoellkopf ’91, Alumni Association President. “This weekend, Marksmen have traveled from across the country to once again gather together in celebration. Tonight, we say thank you to those who make St. Mark’s the place we all love.”
That night, members of twelve classes, from 1957–2012, gathered to celebrate their reunions at classmate’s homes and other special venues. The parents of the Classes of 2012 and 2007 also held reunions hosted by Katherine and Frank Lauinger (2007) and Lydia and Bill Addy (2012).

Alumni Weekend continued on Saturday morning with the Family Cookout. Hundreds of Marksmen and their families enjoyed lunch and fun on the Perot Quadrangle and listened to the sounds of theSt. Mark’s Jazz band. The McDermott-Green Science Quadrangle hosted its final Alumni Weekend Chemistry and Planetarium Shows before work begins on the new Winn Science Center and the McDermott-Green Science Building renovation. Steve Balog, Cecil H. and Ida Green Master Teaching Chair in Science, gave guests a preview of what the new planetarium’s future capabilities and Ken Owens ’89 ended his final chemistry show as “Captain Sunshine” with a bang!
