Serving and Learning
For the students in the Class of 2021, this year’s Community Service event on Saturday, April 1, was an opportunity to both serve and learn. Eighth-grade students from both St. Mark’s and Hockaday met on campus to package more than 10,500 meals for the hungry in Haiti as part of Rise Against Hunger. As Dr. Gabriela Reed, Lower and Middle School counselor, remarked to the students that day, “With many hands we can help a lot of people.”
After they packaged the meals, students engaged in learning activities about malnutrition and hunger. They discussed ideas that they could implement in the coming year. Upper School students from Hockaday also came out to lead the small group discussions.
“As I was leaving campus, I ran into a group of Daisies and Marksmen who were still discussing ideas,” said Meagan Frazier, humanities teacher and Assistant Director of Community Service. “This is just one example of the impact that we can have on our students and their understanding of how to best engage in their community.”
The Class of 2021 has been working toward this Community Service event since sixth grade, when they helped organize food at the North Texas Food Bank, and through seventh grade, when they volunteered at Goodwill.
