Faculty Present at International Conference

On June 26, 2016, a group of 16 St. Mark’s teachers and administrators attended the International Boys Schools’ Coalition summer conference at St. George’s School in Vancouver, British Columbia. They worked with more than 600 other educators from around the world to discuss how best to teach and nurture the development of boys. At the conference, ten St. Mark’s teachers and administrators shared their work with other educators during four presentations, discussing character education, global citizenship, student research projects, and St. Mark’s Visiting Scholars Program.

“In addition to the value of meeting with educators from around the world and sharing practices, the St. Mark’s group benefited from having time to reflect on and discuss our work as a team,” said Associate Headmaster John Ashton, who attended and presented at the conference. “Having the generous resources to send 16 teachers and administrators to this conference provides us with uninterrupted time, formally and socially, to talk about our work and to broaden our relationships.”

During the three and a half days, attendees heard from plenary speakers on topics important to our work with boys. Highlights this year included accomplished scientists, a former Olympian, award-winning journalists, and Dr. Shimi Kang, an award-winning, Harvard-trained doctor, researcher, media expert, and author. Each speaker prompted the attendees to think about how best to work with boys and to create environments that nurture their development.

The International Boys Schools’ Coalition (IBSC), founded in 1995, sponsors the annual summer conference, and a member school is selected to host the annual event. St. Mark’s hosted the event in 2004. This year’s theme was Boys as Global Citizens.
